Πώς πάρθηκε και πότε η απόφαση για την τελετή αφής της Ολυμπιακής φλόγας και της λαμπαδηδρομίας ;

The Olympic Flame symbolizes man’s struggle towards perfection. It is a symbol of friendship and peace amongst all peoples. It symbolizes ¨the light of spirit, knowledge, and life ¨. Its origin is in ancient Greece.

The revivalist of the modern Olympic Games, Pierre de Coubertin, had argued that the Olympic Flame is a connecting point between the old and modern games and recommended the renewal of the Olympic Games, which draw strength from the ancients.

The torch of the Olympic Flame in ancient Olympia and its transfer to the venue of the Olympic Games through a torch relay, was performed for the first time and was established in modern times, at the Berlin Olympic Games in 1936.

At the touch ritual, the high priestess and the priestesses participate, who perform a simple choreography during the ceremony. They are dressed in the archaic way, while following a specific kinesiology and choreography.

The torch ceremony takes place at the site of the temple of Hera at the archeological site of Olympia. There the high priestess asks for the help of the sun god Apollo, so that the torch can be lit. After the torch is lit, the flame is transferred in a clay vessel to the Stadium, accompanied by the priestesses. Before reaching the Stadium, a stop is made at the sacred olive tree, where a young man who has both his parents alive, cuts a branch, a symbol of peace and a victory prize given to the winners during the ancient Olympic Games. Arriving at the Stadium, the priestess lights the torch of the first runner and the torchlight procession begins in order to transfer the flame to the stadium of the Olympic Games ceremony.

The idea of the Olympic Torch and organizing the torch relay was first put forward in 1934 at the Diocese of Tegea, Arkadias. Specifically, on Tuesday, May 22, 1934, the members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) met at the Diocese of Tegea,Arkadias, at the invitation of the then mayor of Tripoli and the TegeatianAssociation for a formal dinner.

After the meal and under the shade of the four centuries-old plane trees at the archeological site of Tegea,Arkadias, various members of the International Olympic Committee spoke. Among them was the German Reiter von Halt, who suggested that the flame be torched in the Holy Altai, Ancient Olympia, and transported by torchbearers of athletes who would cross various countries, until it reached the stadium of the country where the Olympics Games would take place.  The original idea that was heard, filled all the members of the International Olympic Committee with joy. Everyone expressed their enthusiasm and pushed for its implementation.

In commemoration of the fact of the proposal for the torch of the Olympic Flame and the organization of the torch relay, a plaque was hung on the remains of the medieval wall of Tegea,Arkadia, the unveiling of which took place on August 17, 1936.

Tegea,Arkadias, with a long history in sports, left its mark on the modern Olympics. The magic of nature and its landscape, the hospitable inhabitants, inspired the members of the International Olympic Committee for the idea of the Olympic Flame and torchlight procession. Thus, after two years, in 1936, the first torch of the Olympic Flame takes place in Ancient Olympia and the first torchlight procession, from Olympia to Berlin for the 10th Olympic Games.
